I started Hearthstone Chimney Co. in 1984, back when Leesburg was still figuring out whether it was a farm town or a suburb. Forty-two years later, I’ve seen flues that would make a code inspector weep and chimneys that somehow still worked despite everything. I hold a Virginia Class C contractor license and a Level-3 chimney inspection certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America. These days I spend more time on estimates and training than on roofs, though I still climb when someone has a tricky historic stack in Waterford or a three-story colonial in Lansdowne with a reverse draft that nobody can solve. I drink my coffee black and I don’t trust a diagnosis I can’t photograph.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us for eleven years, which in this trade means he’s seen just about every way a chimney can fail in Northern Virginia’s freeze-thaw climate. He’s CSIA-certified and specializes in Level-2 camera inspections - the kind where we run a camera up your flue and show you exactly what we’re looking at on a tablet, right there in your living room. Marcus grew up in Purcellville and still lives there with his wife and two kids. He has a particular knack for finding squirrel nests in chimney caps, and he’ll tell you exactly how they got in and what it’ll take to keep them out. On weekends he restores vintage motorcycles, which he says teaches him patience he applies to masonry work.

Elena handles our liner installations, crown rebuilds, and anything involving HeatShield or DuraFlex products. She came to us after six years in commercial HVAC, and she brought a rigor to our installation work that raised the bar for everyone. She’s factory-trained on Olympia Chimney and Gelco systems, and she’s the person Russell sends when a job requires custom fabrication or a historic property where you can’t just slap in a standard part. Elena lives in Leesburg proper, near Ida Lee Park, and she runs the town’s adult rec soccer league. He’s been with Hearthstone for four years, and before that he spent eight years dispatching for a Fairfax County electrical contractor, so he knows how to triage urgency without manufacturing panic. Darnell schedules every appointment, confirms every estimate, and follows up after every job to make sure the 90-Day Done Right Promise doesn’t just live on paper. He was born in Loudoun County and knows the difference between a one-hour sweep in a Sterling townhome and a full day in a 1920s Leesburg farmhouse with three flues. He fishes the Potomac when the smallmouth are running, and he keeps a map of every dirt road that still cuts through the county.
Jesse P., Apprentice Technician
Jesse joined us in 2023 after completing the masonry program at Lord Fairfax Community College. He’s working toward his CSIA certification under Marcus’s mentorship, and he’s already proficient on basic sweeps, cap installations, and preliminary camera work. Jesse grew up in a 1970s split-level in Countryside where the chimney hadn’t been swept in fifteen years, which is what got him curious about the trade in the first place. He asks more questions than anyone on the crew, which is exactly what we want. He lives with his parents in Ashburn while he saves for his own place, and he’s the reason we now carry boot covers in extra-large.
